Competing in NASCAR’s inaugural season, Christian kicked off her stock car career with a 14th place effort at Charlotte while earning a sixth at Langhorne and a fifth at Pittsburgh. Placing 13th in the 1949 championship standings, Christian made her final start in the 1950 season with a 14th at Hamburg, New York.</image:caption>

Being the only Black member of the RC racing club, he was subjected to racism at a young age. The next year, Lewis received a go-kart for Christmas and was promised that he could race it, if he kept his grades up. In 1998, Hamilton signed with McLaren’s young driver program at the age of 13. By 2007, he became the first Black driver to compete in Formula One. Hamilton became the youngest driver ever to win an F1 title.</image:caption>

Glass bought her first race car with money she earned making and selling ceramic dolls for between $150-300 each. (In 2020 dollars, she would have earned $1,000 to $2,000 per doll.) At 18, Glass became the first woman to compete in sprint cars and was the Northwest Sprint Car Association Rookie of the Year. Glass went on to compete in over 100 races. In 1990, she advanced to the Indy Lights series and was the first Black woman to compete in that series. Her career ended in 1991 after a crash at Phoenix.</image:caption>

After serving in World War II, Scott opened an auto repair shop. He, like other stock car peers, used his driving skills for running moonshine. Scott advanced through the NASCAR ranks, reaching the Grand National Series in 1961. In 1963 at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, he passed Richard Petty with 25 laps to go. Scott went on to win the race, but NASCAR declared Buck Baker the winner. Two hours after the completion of the race, officials noted that not only had Scott won, but Baker was actually two laps down at the completion of the race. The win was not officially changed until 1965, making Scott the first Black driver to win in NASCAR.</image:caption>

When the weekend arrived, my sisters and I spent our allowance on the latest wave of TNG action figures and conjured our own crises against the Romulans or those dreadful Cardassians (who Honest Trailers deemed “omnipresent leather skinned tyrants bent on galactic domination”). Similarly, NASCAR Cup Series sophomore Tyler Reddick shared his first memories of TNG and what catalyzed his love of this series and the overall franchise. “I would say, I mean, what probably got me going and watching it was it becoming available on a streaming service, years and years ago now that it was, and we were traveling down the road,” Reddick said. “So, I kind of got tired of</image:title>

<image:title>SF in NASCAR - While Reddick enjoys the adventures and conflicts in the Alpha Quadrant, it’s no secret how much Ryan Blaney, driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford Mustang, enjoys Star Wars. From meeting Daisy Ridley of the Skywalker trilogy to cosplaying as Princess Leia, Blaney shows a love of Star Wars rivaled only by the passion of his legion fans known as Blaniacs. After viewing The Force Awakens, Blaney said, “I liked the new Star Wars movie. I think they did a great job turning the series around. I’m excited Jar Jar isn’t in it.” Perhaps Landon Cassill, driver of the No. 4 (& 6) JD Motorsports Chevy in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, best sums up the longevity of franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars when he said, “Nostalgia does selll” Much like Star Trek, fans have different opinions of the various eras depicted in Star Wars. Generally speaking, this franchise’s fans love the initial trilogy from Episode IV (A New Hope) to Episode VI (Return of the Jedi), while opinions vary for the prequel trilogy Phantom Menace to Revenge of the Sith). <image:title>The Drive to Post Pandemic Normalcy in NASCAR</image:title>
<image:caption>While NASCAR has yet to officially announce their plans for the Darlington race weekend, the sanctioning body will allow a handful of guests from each team and manufacturer as long as they are fully vaccinated. Certainly, this development proves quite promising for drivers and teams although this expanded access does not include a hauler tour, meeting with a driver, and the access normally enjoyed with a hot pass. Compared to last year’s resumption of the NASCAR season, when a balance of the races were competitors only at a majority of these tracks, this soft reopening is a welcomed change for drivers and teams like Zane Smith, driver of the No. 21 Chevy Silverado in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. “I feel like it should’ve been done a good bit ago, personally,” said Smith. “I feel like it’s only fair for sponsors that want to be involved in our sport. I feel like they should be able to come to the race and enjoy it. I definitely feel this way for fans as well. “It’s life. You want to live it. I think that’s definitely fair. We obviously hope to see as many as possible at Darlington. I feel like every driver misses having the fans in the infield. It was a weird vibe put out, especially when you’d win and it’s just crickets. Now, I guess, we have fans at the track so it’s getting a little bit back to normal. But not quite what it was. But hopefully, we’ll be back to normal shortly.”</image:caption>

<image:title>The Drive to Post Pandemic Normalcy in NASCAR</image:title>
<image:caption>For drivers like Josh Bilicki, who races the No. 52 Rick Ware Racing Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Cup Series, this developing situation may prove beneficial for partnerships and their return of investment. “I haven’t heard anything official from NASCAR yet,” said Bilicki. “But it sounds like we’re going to start opening back up the infield and slowly let sponsors back into the pits, which is essential for small teams and drivers like me. A majority of my sponsorship is sold with intentions of those businesses bringing guests or sales people to the track.”</image:caption>

<image:title>The Drive to Post Pandemic Normalcy in NASCAR</image:title>
<image:caption>The increased attendances across various NASCAR tracks isn’t just noticed by the drivers who are fueled by the fans but those who go over the wall. As Breanna O’Leary, a tire changer from the Chip Ganassi Racing organization illustrated, it’s a sign of NASCAR’s staying power through tumultuous times. “It’s been exciting to look out and see people,” O’Leary observed. “Last year, that became the normal with nobody being out there. So being able to see that is definitely refreshing. At the Truck race in Richmond, there was quite a bit of fans out there. It’s been good to see.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Much like average Americans who’ve had to change their approach with daily tasks like grocery shopping, Tad Geschickter, co-owner of the Nos. 37 and 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevy entries in the Cup division, thought outside the box with a unique concept to bring fans and marketing partners together with the Fanaply digital collectible card series, a realized concept born from a traditional beloved item at the track. “I think the bigger part of it is people collect a hero card in the garage and they may read up about your sponsor,” Geschickter said. “They may respond to a Facebook post for a special offer, but probably more than likely, they don’t. With a virtual collectible, you can literally power up the value of it on the marketplace by doing different activities with your sponsors.” As one of the few car owners who traveled to most of the races last year, watching in the owner’s suite at the track, Geschickter realizes the possibilities are endless in this exciting time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Yeah, it’s tough,” Byron said. “I mean, you have to manage your hydration during the week and really prepare well. You can easily kind of get off track and and get behind and as soon as you do, it’s really hard to catch up. So, I feel like for me, just staying hydrated, eating the right thing. “You know, just all those things are really important this time of year. So try to do those things and my team helps me with trying to keep me cool and give me ideas of how I can keep my body cool. You know, it’s also heat acclamation too. You’ve got to be out in the heat, somewhat, to really kind of understand it. So, it’s a little bit of both. But I feel like I’ve got a good system now.” Perhaps the Cup Series’ hottest driver has a rather unique perspective on how he prepares for these hot weather races. “I think our race car and team does a good job with keeping the temps down for me in the car,” Larson observed. “Texas was hot, but it wasn’t crazy for me. You know, I enjoy the summer months and the summer races. The tracks get slicker and harder to get grip on. I think that usually benefits me. And, yeah, I think you just got to stay hydrated throughout the week, and especially on the weekends and you take good care of yourself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hydration-2021</image:title>
<image:caption>“I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life,” Boyd pointed out. “Since last Thanksgiving, I’ve worked out really hard with Hunter over at FitStop (Performance). A lot of people in the industry work out at FitStop with Hunter. I’ve lost a lot of weight. I feel like I’m in great shape. Hydration, I’ve learned over the years, is key. But just shedding that weight and looking at my heart rate. My average heart rate is down 25-30 points per race.” Weight loss may be key toward optimizing hydration and conditioning the body and mind with summertime’s physical and mental challenges. All told, the importance of hydration kicked into high gear on August 1, 2001, at training camp for the Minnesota Vikings, as reported by Thomas George of the New York Times.</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 NASCAR Preview: New Schedule & the Extended Outlook - Darlington Raceway , May 7-9</image:title>
<image:caption>The first track on our weather tour is “Too Tough to Tame.” This is the first time since 1978 that the NASCAR schedule included a Cup Series race on Mother’s Day. (In 2007, the Darlington Cup race was run on Mother’s Day after the Saturday night race was rained out.) By moving the race from Labor Day weekend to May, NASCAR did drivers and fans a favor with cooler average temps (82/56) during one of the drier months of the year for that area. While May is a drier month by climatology standards, rain is possible for the Darlington 400. Downpours occurred prior to the start of the second May 2020 Darlington race. A break in the rain allowed the Cup series to start. With 20 to go, NASCAR called the field to pit road because of rain and never resumed.</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 NASCAR Preview: New Schedule & the Extended Outlook - Circuit of the Americas , May 22-23</image:title>
<image:caption>Personally, this is the race I have circled on the 2021 NASCAR schedule. All three series head deep into the heart of Texas for a road course showdown. Normal temperatures for the weekend are 88/68. May is the rainiest month of the year for the Austin area, averaging 4.36”. Austin is in what is known as “Flash Flood Alley” with some of its worst flooding occurring in May, notably the deadly Memorial Day floods of 1981 and 2015. (Author’s note: My son and I were actually in Austin for the 2015 flooding. This view is from South Congress facing south.) While NASCAR can race in the rain at COTA, most of Austin’s rain during May comes in the form of afternoon airmass thunderstorms. We’ll keep the lightning clock at the ready for this inaugural NASCAR weekend at COTA.</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 NASCAR Preview: New Schedule & the Extended Outlook - Road America , July 3-4</image:title>
<image:caption>While the Xfinity Series has raced at this historic Wisconsin track since 2010, this is the first appearance for the Cup Series in 55 years. Average temperatures for Independence Day are a pleasant 82/61. You may detect a trend here: July is the second-wettest month of the year, averaging 3.77”. As history shows, NASCAR can and will race in the rain at Road America. While air mass storms make up a good percentage of summer storms, the bigger threat is from mesoscale convective systems (MCS). An MCS can travel hundreds of miles in a day, extend over a hundred miles, and exceed severe thresholds with wind gusts over 70 mph, large hail, and tornadoes. Lightning is a threat as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 NASCAR Preview: New Schedule & the Extended Outlook - Knoxville (IA) , July 9 Atlanta , July 10 &11</image:title>
<image:caption>As the Truck Series heads to America’s heartland to play in the dirt, the Xfinity and Cup Series head to Hotlanta. The Knoxville race is scheduled for the evening hours; therefore, it being the hottest month of the year is not that big of an issue. However, July is the third rainiest month of the year. Similar to Road America, both air mass storms and MCS complexes can occur. While air mass storms are generally daytime events, an MCS may occur at any hour of the day. While the dirt oval needs moisture, torrential rain is overkill.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Conversely, Dr. Studwell provides candid perspectives. “To me, there is a context to his quote that is important and can continue the discussion from there,” Dr. Studwell said. “Verstappen said he would not admit any struggles with mental health (publicly) because he wouldn’t want his opponents to take advantage of it. I don’t think there is anything wrong to say we are weaker when we are struggling with mental health issues. It’s not different to saying I have a broken arm, that arm is weaker. We also say, we want to be stronger day to day when we have our struggles with mental health.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Awareness, 2021, Part Two</image:title>
<image:caption>“I have been more open with my mental health struggles, both with those around me and on social media,” he said. “At times, I am still reluctant to share those issues because on social media, my outward-facing persona is my company, my brands. People can and do go through social media histories for an ‘ah-ha’ or a ‘gotcha!’ But if someone doesn’t want to work with me because of my history or even current mental health struggles, then I don’t think I would want to work with them either. “By understanding the struggles that our friends, peers, those around us are facing, the demons they’re fighting, I think we reduce the stigma and people don’t have to hide it. By being able to openly discuss it, I think it helps the person who is suffering to not feel isolated, uncared about, or unwanted.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Being ‘PhDone’ took pressure off me,” he said. “But having a startup put it right back. I started a meditation app and it’s a personal goal to finish work by a certain time at night. I try to give myself more me-time though I am rarely successful. “One huge benefit that has come out of the pandemic is a Michigan Football alumni group, For Those Who Stayed, has organized a weekly video call. There are occasionally invited speakers about physical and mental health issues, then an open period where we can share our victories of the week and if we are struggling. It is a non-judgmental group of friends and teammates where we can openly share what’s going on in our lives. I also know that if I am having a bad time, I have people I can call.” Much like the country seeing the light from the long dark tunnel of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Studwell expressed optimism with the stigmas surrounding mental health breaking down as he continues to use his platforms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sim Racing’s Appealing Connection for Companies - Who & What is eRacr?</image:title>
<image:caption>eRacr, a sim racing organization founded in 2020 by NASCAR racers Landon Cassill and Parker Kligerman, seeks to promote the most prestigious independent eNASCAR events for competitors using the iRacing platform. Sim racing events, such as the ones hosted by eRacr, provide businesses and corporations with the opportunities to market their brands on virtual stock cars similarly to the bevy of sponsored stock cars carrying the names and brands that consumers purchase and trust with their everyday lives.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Following last July's successful Firecracker 400, eRacr's next event, the Carnomaly 500, looks to turn things up by quite a few notches. For starters, competitors will race in virtual Car of Tomorrow (CoT) stock cars configured to their absolute maximum of 900 horsepower. The Carnomaly 500 presented by eRacr has partnered with Carnomaly, Blue-Emu, and Valvoline, brands familiar to those with a passion for auto racing. Much like the Firecracker 400, the Carnomaly 500 has pulled in a bevy</image:caption>

<image:title>Sim Racing’s Appealing Connection for Companies - Appeal of Sim Racing</image:title>
<image:caption>Prior to the running of the Carnomaly 500, it was quite evident that the event continued sim racing's strong appeal from last year with fans flocking to social media essentially en masse. With strong social media engagement showcasing sim racing's momentum from last year carrying over into this event, businesses seeking for unique ways to showcase their brands and initiatives to a wide audience can turn to sim racing. Sim racing provides entertainment, gritty competition, and excitement similarly as on-track racing with drivers having more abilities to take risks that they may not consider in real life.</image:caption>

As companies like ExoConsulting join the likes of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Valvoline, Carnomaly, and Blue-Emu, sim racing has become a proven commodity to market brands to wider audiences as quickly as virtual stock cars around the high banks of Daytona. <image:title>Mental Health Awareness, 2021, Part One</image:title>
<image:caption>“This month gives a spotlight on mental health and mental illness,” Hobbs said. “We all know how important it is to keep our physical body healthy, but we often neglect our mind. In order to have total wellness, you have to have physical and mental health. Mental health does not discriminate. It can impact everyone at any time.” As the nation reels from racial injustices in recent times, Hobbs acknowledges that those living with a mental illness should be kept in mind. “We talk openly about different injustices and this should include those with a mental illness,” she said. “We are the largest minority group. We are stigmatized in so many ways: incapable, weak, lazy, loner, etc. But there's way more to me than my anxiety. Most people who first meet me, I am usually spunky and outgoing. I'm an extrovert by nature--typically not a thing for someone with a mental illness.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Awareness, 2021, Part One</image:title>
<image:caption>“I started seeing a therapist who had experience working with athletes,” Klein said. “Being able to talk about issues I face in the sport was probably the biggest help. When it comes to how I manage it on race weekends, I find the power of prayer to help me significantly. “You'll often see me praying in my car before heading onto the track, which is often the most stressful time for me. I also found that doing meditation exercises on the road to help out. I also try to interact as much as I can with other people at the track. Sometimes just being able to hang loose with others is enough to help me.” Mental health awareness came to the forefront particularly during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the world came to a halt, people staying at home and away from family and friends became the norm, and the pandemic has tested the mental resolve of many individuals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Awareness, 2021, Part One</image:title>
<image:caption>"That's a tough thing to tell yourself,” Burton said. “I think everyone's had moments like that. I know I have personally where things are rough, you're down on yourself or whatever it may be. And in my business, it's not out there for everyone to see. When you're having a bad weekend, there's 150 people that are there to tell you that you're having a bad weekend. And there's one person that's telling you, 'Hey, good job.' When you have a good weekend, it's the opposite.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Charles Lacarre Vies for Future - De la France à Daytona</image:title>
<image:caption>Naturally, Lacarre’s appreciation for NASCAR evolved from the highlight reel moments to one of the core elements of stock car racing – oval racing. “My love of oval racing developed when I realized that, contrary to European standards where you race the track, oval racing puts an emphasis on racing other drivers,” he shared. “The simple nature of ovals makes it much more difficult to find a competitive edge, and hence, so much more rewarding.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Charles Lacarre Vies for Future - A Man on a Mission</image:title>
<image:caption>“When I fell in love with NASCAR, I fell in love with much more than a sport,” he said. “I learned to love the USA and it involved learning the language, the names of states and their locations, the culture. The size of my home country is the size of Texas. “So, there was definitely some scaling to do and new units of measurement to learn too! It’s so huge and diverse that there is a lot to learn but at the same time, I always kept an accent that most American I have met call ‘cute,’ so, I guess I am remaining true to my roots naturally!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Charles Lacarre Vies for Future - Can’t Stop Lacarre</image:title>
<image:caption>While Lacarre continually works on his racecraft and approach, he possesses the mental and physical toughness prevalent with the greats of NASCAR’s past and present. Perhaps these qualities account for his willpower following a crash during a go-kart race in 2013 that nearly ended his career. “When I was in the hospital for a couple days, all I wanted to do was come back to the track and race, regardless of my health,” he recounted. “Looking back at it, I thank the doctors who told me that I was not physically apt to do so.</image:caption>
